He was arrested in May 2022 and sentenced to three years in Loikaw Prison in Karenni State for “unlawful association.” Pe Maung Same passed away on the 19th of August 2024 at the age of 50, just three days after his medical parole from a junta prison, due to complications from spinal tuberculosis and the consequences of the regime’s abuse he suffered at the detention center in 2022.

Established in 2024

The Pe Maung Same Commemorative Documentary Fund was established on August 22, 2024 to honor the life and legacy of Pe Maung Same, a celebrated documentary filmmaker from Myanmar who dedicated his life to creating documentary films. Tragically, his career was cut short when he was arrested in May 2022 in Karenni State in his filming trip, sentenced to three years in Loikow Prison for engaging with “illegal association,” and subsequently passed away on the 19th of August 2024 after suffering torture and contracting tuberculosis in military custody.

In memory of his fearless spirit and dedication to the craft, a group of his close friends and fellow filmmakers came together to establish this fund. Our mandate is to continue Pe Maung Same’s mission by offering financial support and resources to aspiring documentary filmmakers.
